CINEMANIAC - As a yearlong continuous research and exhibition project, Cinemaniac was born from the desire to present works from the world of art and film created at the crossroads of these media. From its very beginning, it has been an active context enabling the presentation of works of art, a meeting place where social, cultural, technological, media and aesthetic aspects integrate, an intersection where art, artists, institutions and audiences meet, where new forms of cooperation are formed, and where relationships between film and visual arts are discussed. The exhibitions within the current and future program platform Think Film, as research in progress, are a continuation of past experience with historical heritage of experimental film, like the research and presentation whose center of attention was MAFAF Festival in Pula (2010), as well as last year’s look backwards, the retrospective CINEMANIAC X. The project gathers artists who form a specific relationship with the idea of film as a „space for thought“, film by other means, and a criticism of the film apparatus, a place which reflects social, ideological and cultural aspects, where film becomes a kind of repertory, a cultural interface.
From the publication “Slobodan Šijan: Film Leaflet”, CINEMANIAC 2012:
“From this institution, the Film Leaflet as an expression, we shall be observing the films introduced by the Film Leaflet, with which it produces and corresponds. In this exhibition, films are a “leaflet by other means”, and in such a contemplation of leaflet/institution, they are a manifest, an exhibition, an experiment, a starting point, a conclusion. They project into the future finding, anticipating, sensing, dictating motives, topics and issues of the later “big” filmography; they avail themselves of the entire experience of experimental film, and the history of film language is their resource treated with the enthusiasm and self-confidence of a Bildungsroman protagonist. From the ecosystem, work process and song of the “city landfill on ada huja in belgrade”, through textures of image and sound in the film “Yeah”, to the shooting from the cemetery in “Morning in Pink”, here comes the Leaflet, film thinking by all means.”
Aleksandra Sekulić, “Film thinking by all means”
The visual production of “works on paper”, such as the Film Leaflet by Slobodan Šijan, represents an art form where artists experiment with a cinematic way of thinking and a wish to earn recognition for a marginal artistic area of visual and textual works, pointing out their research and critical potential, and destabilizing the usual paradigm. In a way, Film Leaflet represents Šijan’s hybrid encyclopedia comprising antifilm, the filmography of Yugoslav cinema, single directors like John Ford, Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock…, Boško Tokin’s Filmus, lists, comments, notes, diagrams. Šijan's experimental films also appear in the Film Leaflet, just like some of his works produced in other media like Media Suicide, the Kitsch Sequence or Vertigo. In this way Film leaflet takes a significant place in Šijan’s oeuvre. His current reactualization and reinterpretation contribute to a renewed interest in a whole series of avant-garde and neo-avant-garde art practices.
