“Bringing Closer to the People” is a book published by Lumbardhi Foundation and edited by Sezgin Boynik, stemming from an original text of Otto Bihajli-Merin from 1953 and the restoration and fresco copies done by Zdenka and Branislav Živković around the same period. They relate to the frescoes of the Our Lady of Ljeviš, a 13th century Orthodox Church in Prizren, part of the UNESCO World Heritage list.
From Byzantine Art to Religious Heritage in the Yugoslav Communist Cultural policies, the book covers a rich array of topics and particular moment in the churches history, bringing a fresh perspective by contextualizing the frescoes and Bihajli-Merin’s text through an introduction by Boynik, a new text by art historian Jelena Vesić and an excerpt from a thesis on byzantine art by Shkelzen Maliqi.
The book will be introduced by the editor Boynik, contributor Vesić and director of Lumbardhi Foundation, Ares Shporta, to be followed by a conversation with participants.
The event is organized in partnership with the Heinrich Böll Foundation. The book will be available for purchase on site for a price of 10 euros.
