Pulse of Europe

Accession to the EU is not merely an endeavor of the political elite and the EU bodies which often measure the success of the process with important landmarks, such as opening new chapters and successful closing of open chapters. This process can me painstakingly long and demanding with a lot of technical aspects. For the EU, as well as for the country in the accession process, the existence of cohesive capital is necessary – with mutual and internalized European values, and that the citizens feel that they are not excluded from this process. True success of an accession process requires not just a series of reforms, but the implementation of those reforms in a responsible and transparent way – which influences the need for an informed citizen. Many factors influence citizens’ opinions and there is no simplified correlation. However, the sentiment of the citizens, or rather their relationship toward the EU integration can affect the process and its outcome.

However, the results of various research indicate a very low level of content focusing on EU accession in all types of media and moreover, this content mainly relies on state sources. Content which would develop complex technical aspects of the process into stories about topics which would interest citizens is missing.

The goal of the Pulse of Europe project is raising awareness, informing the public and understanding the process of Serbia’s accession as well as raising awareness about the process of Serbia’s accession to the EU.

The project is financed by the EU and implemented by the Goethe Institute in collaboration with the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia and the Center for Cultural Decontamination.
