The Ups and Downs, the Highs and Lows... and the Forgotten

The Ups and Downs, Highs and Lows… and the Forgotten is an invitation to explore (read, look, listen) and partake. It is an online presentation of a series of research and selected materials realized from May to June 2020 and followed by vigorous discussions on the issues of cultural exchanges, cooperation and mutual influences between the US and Yugoslavia/Serbia. Focus is placed on seven different disciplines or cultural fields via historical case studies in film, contemporary art, music, urban planning, theatre, poetry and comic, with an additional discussion about the beginnings of American popular culture influence in the region and globally.

Ups and Downs, Highs and Lows… and the Forgotten is designed to supplement already established work on the political and cultural relations between the United States of America and Yugoslavia, that is, the Republic of Serbia, by supporting empirical research and reinvigorating interest in both known and new stories (this is to say forgotten) that are evidence of exchanges and mutual artistic and cultural influences at the time of official cooperation upgrades and downgrades. Through these diverse disciplinary approaches and discussions with invited scholars and artists, practitioners and experts, inside and outside of the fields of interest, we want to create a community that can further our thinking about American and Yugoslav/Serbian intercultural influences within the contexts of the diplomatic, cultural and economic relations of the United States of America and the Republic of Serbia, by also looking at the informal networks, underground movements, and personal connections – thus creating new genealogies and stories of those relationships.
